Understanding Different Types of Dental X-Rays

Dental X-rays come in several types, each serving a specific purpose in diagnosing and treating dental conditions

  1. Bitewing X-Rays: These X-rays show the upper and lower teeth in one area of the mouth, highlighting cavities between teeth and changes in bone density caused by gum disease.

  2. Periapical X-Rays: These provide a complete view of a single tooth from the crown to the root, allowing dentists to see the entire tooth structure and surrounding bone.

  3. Panoramic X-Rays: These images capture the entire mouth in a single shot, including all the teeth, jaws, nasal area, and sinuses, and are useful for identifying issues with jaw alignment, impacted teeth, and overall dental health.

  4. Occlusal X-Rays: These X-rays show the roof or floor of the mouth and are used to find extra teeth, teeth that have not yet broken through the gums, and jaw fractures.

  5. Full Mouth Series: This comprehensive set of X-rays includes multiple bitewing and periapical X-rays, providing a detailed view of the entire mouth for thorough examination and diagnosis.

Each type of dental X-ray helps dentists diagnose and treat different aspects of oral health, ensuring a complete and accurate assessment.
